I’ve nicknamed the last Sunday before Christmas “Fat Sunday” because it is our second day of baking and boy, do I feel fat!
Josh and I baked Christmas cookies today for the first time since we’ve been together. This is our fourth Christmas together. I think I made one or two types of cookies during previous Christmases prior to meeting Josh, but I never got into the whole “baking” thing until this weekend. It was always my mom and sister who did the cooking, never me.
Well, if you know me and Josh at all you’ll know that we tend to do things ALL the way or not at all. (This may be due in part to our addictive personalities!) So, two trips to Kroger, One trip to Walmart, two trips to Dollar General (for cookie tins), two days, and about $150 later, this is what we ended up with (times… oh, about a shitload):

^Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

^Nutty Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies

^Coconut Chews

^Coconut Crunch

^Double Chocolate Mint

^”Fruity Pachewtie” Chocolate Chip Cookies

^Almond Biscotti (chocolate-dipped)

^Piccoli Biscotti
I think I can finally understand why people do this. It’s actually fun! Who knew? Unfortunately, the fruits of my labor are headed directly to my butt. Ah well… that’s why New Years resolutions were invented, right?
Happy Fat Sunday, everyone!
Wow – you must have been baking for 48 hours straight! They all look so good – I’ve never had coconut chews – they sound wonderful. Well, okay, they all sound wonderful but that is one I hadn’t heard of before and also I haven’t heard of piccoli biscotti. I can’t believe you made your own biscotti! Awesome! I volunteer to take some of those off your hands, you know, purely to stave off any diabetic coma you may be approaching.
I’m glad you and Josh had fun with the cookies – you little domestic divas you! I love baking in the winter! So homey and warm and fun. Maybe this is a new tradition for you and Josh.
Thanks, Teeni! I think this will be our new tradition. We had so much fun. We really make a great team when we do stuff together.
The coconut chews and coconut crunch cookies are the same recipe, but some we cooked longer so they got crunchy. I just named them that. I think the recipe we used just called them “coconut cookies”! I also named the piccoli biscotti because we had regular long biscotti and then shorter, crescent-shaped ones. So I figured small=piccoli!
I also named the “fruity pachewtie” cookies because I just made them up. They turned out to be Josh’s favorites. They have dried cranberries, chocolate chips, plus a little bit of oatmeal and coconut for texture. Yummy! The double chocolate mint ones are MY favorite though. Josh mostly made those. I want to eat them every day.
Wow! You put me to shame, girl. I thought I was doing good by baking a couple of dozen cookies for the neighborhood. They look scrumptious! Yum. Next Christmas, I’m coming over to your house!
I wish I could put out samples on my blog! Maybe that will be possible someday in the distant future…
Mmm, looks good!
The problem with baking your own stuff, is you realise how much sugar and butter you put in there (and then into your mouth, which heads straight to your arse!) but you tell yourself it is better than store-bought stuff cos there are no preservatives in it
That is my story and I am sticking to it.
I am not a biscuit (sorry….you guys call them cookies!) baker – I like slices. Made a great lemon one on Saturday, but I think you may have inspired me – I reckon I would looove the choc ones. Mmmmmm. Drool.
Yeah, plus all my cookies are trans-fat free, so that makes them a health food.
I gained 15 lbs just looking at those pictures..thank you very much! They all look yummy. I used to do a lot of baking but as I’ve gotten older I just well…don’t!
You need to start a recipe section!
Ha ha… Sounds like you have my metabolism! I’m eating whatever I want until after I get back home from our holiday trip. Then it’s back to the pre-wedding diet until the scale is back where it is supposed to be.
Laura, they look so good, you and J did a great job! That must have been so fun doing it together! That’s probably why it was so fun!
Ohh, dollar store for the tins, good thinkn’ girlie!
I hope you and Josh have an amazing first Christmas as a married couple together
WHOOT! Love Love Love!!
xoxxoxoxo
Aww, thanks, Anne. The dollar store is great for the smaller tins. Mainly because it was much less crowded than going back to Walmart!
Oh, these look fantastic! I had a cookie exchange thing on the weekend so I’ve been baking too! But I haven’t really eaten much of them. Today was fat Monday cause Talea and I ordered Swiss Chalet and sat at reception stuffing our faces with grease and butter! Mmmmmm. Delicious, forbidden front-desk eating.
Have a Merry Christmas you adorable newly wed couple you!
Thanks, Em! And, uh, yeah… I haven’t been eating the cookies either… Just SAMPLING!
I KNEW you would one day get into baking! You have the knack!
Ha! Maybe good old Mom came sit back a bit from now on, letting you young’uns take the reins! I like the sound of that!
Those cookies look so good! I want to sample every one of them! Make sure J. leaves us some! (“cause you would never eat too many, right?
)
I am making the baklava tomorrow. I figured that way I wouldn’t have time to sit down and eat half the pan before you guys got home! hahaha!!
You have to sample them all! And don’t worry, we have PLENTY! OMG, Josh is dying to have more of your baklava. I think he talked about that stuff every day until Easter last year. He tried getting some from the grocery store recently and was very disappointed. Well, DUH!
Everything looks so delicious! I wish I was coming to your place or lived near by.
Have a Merry Christmas.
Thanks, and I hope you had a Merry Christmas too. Sorry I’m late with my replies!
Yummy!
And today, as soon as I started working out, my MP3 player died!
It was telling you to take a holiday from working out.
Try again next year.
Wow, they all look amazing! I Love, lurve, love baking (but, yes, it is terrible for the size of my butt!)
I’m with you on that last bit! But they were pretty yummy. Looking back on this post now makes me all nostalgic and stuff…
