I’m extremely susceptible to earworms. At almost any moment, you could ask me what’s going through my head and there will almost surely be some background music playing, if not drowning out every other thought that tries to get in. And it’s rarely a song I like either. Just whatever happens to latch on, either from my hearing the song itself, or simply phrases or lyric fragments.
Today I was grooming a big golden retriever. Like most goldens I groom, this one was a “sitter”. Every time I tried to scrub, blow dry, brush or comb her rear end or tail, or do anything to her legs or feet, she’d sit down. It gets really frustrating, especially when I’m already achy and sweating an hour into it, constantly having to hold up 90 lbs of golden blubber with one arm, while brushing with the other.
What the hell does this have to do with earworms, you ask? Well, finally, exhausted, back hurting, frustration level high, I begged her, “please stand up!” That’s all it took… For the rest of the day, all I could hear in my head was, “I’m slim shady, yes I’m the real shady, all you other slim shadys are just imitating…”
AAAARGH!!!
Gee, I didn’t know there was a name for it. Interesting.
Fortunately, it doesn’t afflict me very often…. though every now and again I get stuck on the theme from the Adams Family.
Ooooh I get this allllll the time!! And after a while I annoy myself ’cause I (usually) only know part of the song.
Oh, how annoying that is! ERG.
Sheeeeit! Now I have that damn Slim Shady song in my head, damn you!!
Obviously many in the family are afflicted by the earworms. This morning it was -are you ready? Kokomo! AAGHHH
You poor thing.
Too farkin’ funny!!
Ah HAHA! This just really cracked me up! I didn’t know that term for it either, but it makes so much sense. I once had the theme song for the Smurfs cartoon stuck in my head for about a year (the advantages of having so many nieces and nephews). I’d find myself humming it or whistling it when I least expected it. Grr. Anyway, freakily enough – I just listened to one of Weird Al’s songs and part of it was a parody of that Slim Shady song.
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I’ll take the song in my head compared with what I thought an “ear worm” might be, like something you caught from a dogs ass – lol. Thank goodness the Wikipedia answer was so much better than expected!
I do know what you mean, though! My daughter does it to me all the time, sings some little clip and I’m done for. For fearful thoughts I force myself to start repeating something else, cause supposedly you’re not able to hold more than one single thing in your head at a time. It seems to work most of the time.
My Dobe is a sitter too. Drives me nuts when I bathe her.
Good song though…
Ha! Talea and I sing ‘Rock Lobster’ at work all day. We’ll just be sitting in our office and one of us will just squawk ‘ROCK LOB-STAAAAAH???’ and the other will go ‘ROCK LOB-STAAAAAAH!!!’ Fun times, fun times.
i dont mind having that song stuck in me head. .
I’m learning so much from the blog world. Never knew there was a name for it…this happens to me almost daily. Hot For Teacher was on the 80s station and I’m singing “got it made, got it made, got it made” all day until Swain overhears, laughs and tells me David Lee Roth is saying “got it bad” over and over.
I love programming people at work. If I hum a little line of “Afternoon Delight”, inevitably I’ll hear it coming back from someone close by.
p.s. I still sing “got it made”, only louder now.
I wake up with an earworm probably 5 days of the week. And it DRIVES.ME.INSANE!! I guess it’s because I listen to music about 19 hours of my day but still. Annoying, right? And most of the time it’s totally random shit like Cheeseburger in Paradise!!! WTF, right??
